PERCY MAIN CHASE It DOWN

Percy Main 1st XI made it five wins from nine in Division 4 North with a convincing five-wicket victory away at Monkseaton CC on Saturday, chasing down 234 with a full 14 overs to spare. After winning the toss and inserting the hosts on a tricky Churchill Playing Fields surface, the Main bowlers toiled hard to restrict Monkseaton to 233/7 from their 50 overs - then the batters made light work of the target, led by a blistering 96 from John Allan and a classy unbeaten 72 from Anshad Pulayakathil.

Beever Century the Backbone for Monkseaton

Monkseaton's innings was built almost entirely around opener Chris Beever, who carried his bat deep into the innings with a patient 108 from 145 deliveries (11 fours, 1 six). He shared a 94-run opening stand with Richard Ord, who made a fluent 51 from 56 balls including 11 boundaries before Max McGhee drew him out of his crease for a sharp stumping by Josh Jee.

James Dance was the pick of the Percy Main attack, returning figures of 12-4-31-2 in a typically disciplined display that yielded 53 dot balls. Dance removed John-Paul Price (30) and Jonathan Ainsley (3) to check Monkseaton's middle-order momentum just as they threatened to accelerate. McGhee matched him for threat, finishing with 2 for 43 from his 9 overs including the key scalp of Beever, caught by Anshad Pulayakalathil at 228/6.

Monkseaton's over 14 was their most productive - a 21-run explosion featuring five boundaries - but the Main bowlers responded superbly. Alex Young sent down 10 tidy overs for 43, while Akakhel Mashal wheeled away for 12 overs to claim 1 for 45. Two sharp run-outs in the closing overs helped restrict Monkseaton to a total that felt very gettable on a ground where the ball doesn't always come on.

Allan Blitz Takes the Game Away

If Monkseaton hoped 233 would prove awkward on a low, slow surface, John Allan had other ideas. The right-hander produced one of the innings of the season, crunching 96 from just 63 balls with a staggering 20 fours - a masterclass of front-foot driving and crisp placement that dismantled the home attack inside the first 25 overs of the chase. His partnership with Max McGhee (17) added 62 for the first wicket before Chris Beever cleaned up McGhee to make it 62/1.

Allan continued to attack after losing Akakhel Mashal (6) and Liam Campbell (6) in quick succession, and the scoreboard pressure simply vanished. By the time he fell at 142/4 - caught by Tom Reevell off Adam Doyle - the hard yards were done and the required rate was barely a whisper.

Enter Anshad Pulayakalathil, who played the perfect supporting hand and then took centre stage. His unbeaten 72 from 76 balls (9 fours, 3 sixes) was an exhibition in pacing a run chase: watchful when required, devastating when the bad ball arrived. He found a willing ally in Joshua Thelwell, who cracked 34 from 31 deliveries (5 fours, 1 six) in a partnership of 71 for the fifth wicket that took the game well beyond Monkseaton's reach. Josh Jee applied the finishing touch with a composed 4 not out as the winning runs came in the 37th over.

What They Said

John's knock was special, and he was unlucky to miss out on his second ton of the season. Anshad finishing it off like that, pure class. The bowlers set it up though, The Lord of the Dance and Max were outstanding. Skipper Al Young
