Women Break Their 2026 Duck in Style at Warkworth

Percy Main's Women's Softball team got their 2026 season up and running in the best possible way on Sunday, producing a superb all-round display to defeat Warkworth by 24 runs at a sun-drenched Warkworth Cricket Club. After three hard-fought defeats to start the Women's Outdoor Bash North Division campaign, this was the performance the side had been threatening - and as a bonus, it featured memorable debuts from Cherie Lowden and Lucy Mcintosh.

Roys Leads From the Front With the Ball

Skipper Megan Roys won the toss and chose to field, and every bowler repaid that faith with a disciplined display on a pleasant afternoon where temperatures touched 20 degrees. Warkworth were restricted to 88 for 5 from their 15 overs, with extras the top contributor at 45 - a mark of the pressure Percy Main's attack applied throughout.

The standout performance came from Megan Roys, who delivered a magnificent spell of 2 overs, 1 maiden, just 1 run conceded and 3 wickets. That is a return that would grace any scorecard at any level of the game. Roys simply gave nothing away, hitting her lengths from ball one and reaping the rewards as the Warkworth batters struggled to get her away.

There were also two very special moments for the debutants. Cherie Lowden marked her first appearance in Percy Main colours with a wicket, finishing with 1 for 6 from her single over. Not to be outdone, Lucy Mcintosh also got in on the act, picking up a wicket in her 2-over spell that cost just 12. Evie Staerck provided excellent support with a tidy 2-0-9-0 in an attack where every bowler played their part.

Mcintosh Caps Dream Debut With the Bat

Chasing 89 to win, Percy Main made light work of the target, reaching 102 for 3. There were no reckless shots, just smart cricket and good running between the wickets.

Lucy Mcintosh completed an unforgettable debut by topping the scoring for Percy Main, finishing unbeaten on 11 from just 9 deliveries including two crisp boundaries. Eve Hage was equally impressive at the death, with 10 from 11 balls, as the pair guided the side home with calm assurance. Megan Roys - continuing her fine all-round day - struck a run-a-ball 8, while Evie Staerck added a composed 8 from 12 deliveries. Sarah Cairns (7 from 8), Cat Ingoe (6 from 5 including a boundary), Naomi Thomson (6 from 10), Cherie Lowden (4) and Chloe Mills (3) all found the scoreboard in a true collective batting display. On her debut, Lowden may have only scored 4, but she occupied the crease for 13 deliveries - showing exactly the kind of patience and application that makes for a valuable teammate.

First Points on the Board

The victory lifts Percy Main off the foot of the Women's Outdoor Bash North Division table and gets the side's points tally moving in the right direction. With four games played and plenty of cricket still to come this summer, this result provides the perfect platform to build upon.

A Warm Welcome at Warkworth

A special word of thanks must go to Warkworth Cricket Club for their wonderful hospitality throughout the afternoon. The club laid on an excellent tea after the game, which was greatly appreciated by everyone from Percy Main. It is one of the great traditions of recreational cricket - fierce competition on the field followed by friendship and good food off it - and Warkworth exemplified that spirit perfectly.

A thoroughly deserved first win of the summer, built on tight bowling, smart batting, two memorable debuts and a real squad performance. Well played all!
